With all network services integrated into a single device, edgeBOX provides a cost effective solution for schools and colleges wanting to provide email, file sharing and web access to their staff and students. Escola Martim de Freitas in Coimbra, Portugal was an early adopter of the edgeBOX.

From October 2004 the school has used edgeBOX as a gateway to the Internet, providing email accounts for over 1,300 students, 200 teachers and 60 other members of staff; hosting an intranet which has become central to the running of the school and providing a public web site so the school can reach out to parents and become an integral part of the community it serves.

Providing an all-in-one solution to the school has been important in lowering ICT costs by both reducing the number of computers that are needed to deliver network services and minimising the time and effort needed to support them.

Access to the Internet

Access to all network services is controlled by passwords providing a greater level of security and accountability. By effectively controlling junk mail and filtering web sites and web pages, all information delivered to the school is guaranteed to be appropriate for minors to view.

A Gateway for Ideas

Open Source applications are an important factor in reducing the costs of installing and maintaining computer systems for schools. Based on Linux, edgeBOX is used to host web-based applications that improve communication between students and professors, as well as providing collaboration tools for project teams.

Simple Administration

User accounts and simple administration tasks are performed by a trained member of staff. More complex tasks are performed by a System Administrator at Critical Software\'s support centre, accessing the web-based Control Centre provided by edgeBOX over a secure connection.
